In the game of Jacks or Better, there are six primary starting hands that you may get. Those consist of:

1. Two pair or higher
2. Pay pair
3. Non-pay pair
4. Two or more pay cards, unpaired
5. One pay card only
6. No pay cards at all

Where pay cards are defined as a Jack, Queen, King, or Ace.

In the case that you should already have a two pair or higher, hold the winning hands you’ve already got. You’re already certain to win whether or not you draw better cards.

When you have a pay pair, keep it; it may bring you more profit after the redraw.

Non-pay pairs do not qualify for a payout in and of themselves, but they should be held for the potential of redrawing an improved hand, such as two pair or three of a kind.

When you have two or more pay cards in your hand which are unpaired, it is advisable to keep the lowest two suited pay cards. The lowest two suited pay cards are preferred over the lowest two unsuited pay cards due to their potential for a flush.

If you have only one pay card, it is still recommended to hold that one rather than discard it with the rest of your cards. If you have no pay cards, discard all five and cross your fingers during the redraw.
